Kagoshima Press Conference: Expanding Food Exports and Managing Local Challenges

On October 17, Kagoshima Prefecture held a press conference to address questions from the media. Key topics discussed included the governor's recent overseas visit, transportation developments, and housing policies.

Governor's Middle East Visit Promotes Kagoshima Cuisine

The governor visited several Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, to promote Kagoshima's local food products. The initiative was driven by the need to diversify export channels in light of global trade shifts, such as U.S. tariff policies.

During the visit, the governor met with government officials and restaurant industry representatives to exchange views. The delegation found that Kagoshima's food products were highly regarded in the region, although they were not widely available in local supermarkets. Based on these findings, the governor expressed his commitment to further market research and leveraging connections made during the trip to expand distribution channels.

Response to Continued Suspension of Hong Kong–Kagoshima Air Route

The air route between Hong Kong and Kagoshima has remained suspended since July 2025. The governor stated that the prefecture will continue efforts to resume the service, recognizing its importance for tourism and economic exchange.

Record-Breaking Cruise Ship Arrivals

Kagoshima has recorded 157 cruise ship port calls so far this year—the highest number on record. The prefecture anticipates the total to reach approximately 180 by year-end. In response to increased passenger traffic, the government is working to address transportation challenges, including congestion on public transit and the need for improved secondary transport options. Efforts to attract more cruise ships will continue.

Prefectural Housing Offered to Foreign Workers

To address the issue of vacant public housing units caused by population decline, Kagoshima Prefecture has begun offering some of these units to foreign workers. A total of 160 units out of 1,800 have been designated for this initiative. The prefecture emphasized that the housing program prioritizes local residents and complies with legal regulations.
