Kumamoto Prefecture Announces Disaster Recovery Support, Record Agricultural Exports, and Traffic Congestion Partnership Progress
Kumamoto Prefecture held a press conference to announce support measures for victims of recent heavy rainfall, report record-breaking export figures for agricultural, livestock, and marine products in 2024, and update progress on its traffic congestion partnership program.
Recovery Support for Heavy Rain Damage
The prefecture disclosed the extent of damage caused by recent heavy rains, which resulted in both human and property losses—including collapsed homes and widespread agricultural damage.
To aid recovery, Kumamoto will provide temporary housing for affected residents and financial assistance for small businesses. In the agricultural sector, the prefecture is offering support to restore damaged facilities and helping farmers procure alternative tomato seedlings, which were particularly hard-hit.
Agricultural, Livestock, and Marine Exports Reach Record High
In 2024, Kumamoto's exports of agricultural, livestock, and marine products totaled ¥15.14 billion—exceeding the target of ¥14 billion and marking the highest figure on record. Key drivers of this growth include:
- Increased sales of beef and processed foods, fueled by rising global interest in Japanese cuisine
- Expanded log exports to China
- Diversification of fishery product sales channels, with notable growth in exports to North America and Southeast Asia
The prefecture reaffirmed its commitment to further expanding international sales channels.
Traffic Congestion Partnership Program Reaches Milestone
Kumamoto Prefecture also reported progress on its initiative to reduce traffic congestion through partnerships with local businesses. The program encourages staggered work hours and telecommuting as part of a broader mobility strategy.
As of now, over 200 companies have applied to register as partners—meeting the prefecture's initial target. The recruitment period has been extended until September 30 to allow additional organizations to join.
