Miyazaki Prefecture Announces New Rice Variety “Hinata-Mai”, Opening of Cycling Stadium, and Fundraising Goods for National Sports Festivals

Miyazaki Prefecture held a press conference to unveil the name of its newly developed rice variety, announce the opening of a renovated cycling stadium, and introduce new fundraising merchandise for the upcoming National Sports Festivals.

New Rice Variety Named “Hinata-Mai”

The prefecture revealed that its new rice variety will be called “Hinata-Mai.” The rice has been under development for 14 years, and it has now been officially approved by the national government. According to officials, the new variety is more resistant to high temperatures and disease, and it produces higher yields than existing varieties.

Miyazaki Prefecture solicited name ideas from the public and selected “Hinata-Mai” because it conveys both the rice's delicious flavor and the warm, sunny image associated with Miyazaki. Sales are scheduled to begin in 2027.

“Hinata Velo-Drome Miyazaki” Opens on January 31

The prefecture also announced the reopening of its renovated cycling stadium, now named “Hinata Velo-Drome Miyazaki”. The upgraded facility features a Japanese-standard 333‑meter banked track, a central field suitable for major events and athlete training, and an underground passageway.

The governor expressed confidence that the new stadium, now compliant with national standards, will attract a wide range of competitions and training camps, taking advantage of Miyazaki's favorable climate and location.

New Fundraising Merchandise for National Sports Festivals

Miyazaki Prefecture introduced new fundraising goods for the National Sports Festivals it will host. The festival's concept emphasizes creating a society where everyone can thrive, regardless of disability.

In line with this theme, the new merchandise consists of two tote bag designs featuring artwork created by people with disabilities. One design showcases the three Miyazaki mascot characters, “Miyazaki-Ken”, while the other features a turret surrounded by various animals. Sales began on January 14 at three stores within the prefecture.
