Nagasaki Governor Addresses Regional Developments at Press Conference
On July 11, the Governor of Nagasaki Prefecture held a press conference to address several key regional issues. Topics included the upcoming Nagasaki Peace Culture Festival 2025, the deployment of Osprey aircraft to neighboring Saga Prefecture, the suspension of ferry services between Nagasaki Port and Shinkami-Goto Town, and ongoing concerns regarding the stalled Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen project.
Nagasaki Peace Culture Festival 2025
Nagasaki Prefecture announced plans to host the Nagasaki Peace Culture Festival in 2025. TAKAHIRO, a member of the acclaimed music group EXILE and a native of Nagasaki, has been appointed as the festival’s official ambassador. While specific details of the event were not disclosed, the Governor confirmed that TAKAHIRO will participate in the opening ceremony.
Osprey Deployment in Saga Prefecture
Regarding the planned deployment of Osprey aircraft, the Governor stated that the prefectural government had already requested the Ministry of Defense to disclose flight route information and ensure operations avoid densely populated areas. While expressing a cooperative stance, the Governor acknowledged public apprehension over the aircraft’s safety and emphasized the importance of transparent communication and community reassurance.
Suspension of Ferry Service
The Governor also commented on the upcoming suspension of ferry services between Nagasaki Port and Shinkami-Goto Town by a private operator. The prefectural government refrained from issuing a definitive response or proposing remedial measures, such as financial assistance, citing sufficient existing transportation volumes to the area.
Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen Project
Concerning the halted construction of the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen in Saga Prefecture, the Governor reiterated his intention to engage in dialogue with stakeholders including Saga Prefecture and JR Kyushu. He maintained that the development of the express rail line carries value not only for Nagasaki Prefecture but also for Japan as a whole.
