Nagasaki Governor Addresses NPT, Shinkansen Plans, and Tourism Funding

On May 26, the Governor of Nagasaki Prefecture held a press conference. Prior to the event, he mentioned his participation in the Preparatory Committee for the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), as well as the prefecture’s promotional month for encouraging the use of local products.

Regarding the NPT, the governor expressed disappointment that a proposed recommendation was rejected. He also reported on his activities at a side event of the conference, where he represented Nagasaki Prefecture. Furthermore, he reaffirmed his commitment to the abolition of nuclear weapons and emphasized the importance of sharing information about their inhumanity—especially as the leader of one of only two cities in the world to have suffered an atomic bombing.

During the Q&A session, the governor responded to various questions from reporters. Topics included:

  • The resumption of air ambulance services

  • Progress on reaching a consensus regarding the construction of the Kyushu Shinkansen line through Saga Prefecture

  • New funding sources for tourism promotion

On the Kyushu Shinkansen issue, the governor stressed the importance of constructing the line through Saga Prefecture and connecting Nagasaki Prefecture to the national Shinkansen network. He stated that discussions would continue, including negotiations over Saga Prefecture’s financial burden, and that he would request the national government’s involvement.

Regarding new financial resources for tourism promotion, he said that Nagasaki Prefecture would carefully consider the matter through a committee, incorporating input from businesses and municipalities, including Nagasaki City.

Among the topics raised, one of particular interest was the governor’s political funding issue.(Note: This article does not address the political funding issue due to ongoing uncertainties.)
