Oita Prefecture Announces Regional Initiatives and Cultural Events Ahead of Autumn 2025
On September 19, Oita Prefecture held a press conference to unveil a series of upcoming campaigns, inter-prefectural discussions, and cultural programs. These initiatives reflect the region's commitment to collaboration, sustainability, and tourism development.
Oita and Ehime Governors to Meet for Regional Policy Dialogue
On September 30, the governors of Oita and Ehime Prefectures will convene in Oita to discuss shared regional challenges and future cooperation. Key agenda items include:
• Tourism Promotion
The two leaders will explore strategies for attracting tourists in the post-Osaka Expo era, with a focus on cycling tourism as a sustainable and engaging travel option.
• Nuclear Safety and Disaster Preparedness
Discussions will center on the Ikata Nuclear Power Plant in Ehime, located near the Oita border. The governors aim to strengthen safety measures and evacuation coordination, especially in the event of a serious incident that could affect neighboring communities.
• Cross-Strait Transportation Infrastructure
As part of a national initiative to enhance connectivity, the two prefectures will review plans for a new transportation route—potentially a tunnel or bridge—spanning the strait. The project is expected to deliver economic benefits and serve as a vital backup route in times of disaster.
Oita Prefectural Culture and Arts Festival: October 1 – November 30
Running for two months, the annual Culture and Arts Festival will feature a diverse lineup of performances and exhibitions, including:
- Ballet and opera performances
- Orchestra concerts
- Painting exhibitions
Forest Conservation Tax Report
Oita Prefecture released its latest report on the forest conservation tax, which has been in place since 2006 and is funded by residents and businesses. During the fourth term (2021–2025), approximately ¥130 million was spent on forest maintenance and sustainability initiatives. The prefecture is considering extending the tax and related policies to ensure long-term environmental stewardship.
New Hot Spring Tourism Guidebook Released
To further promote its renowned hot spring destinations, Oita Prefecture has published a new tourism guidebook featuring iconic onsen areas, including Beppu, Yufuin. The guidebook highlights local attractions, wellness experiences, and travel tips.
